LTC offers Community Outreach classes to general public

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
02/13/08

CLEVELAND, WI
The general public is invited to take advantage of Lakeshore Technical College’s Community Outreach classes to explore areas of interest or learn a new skill.

These convenient, affordable classes are held at the high schools in Kiel, Mishicot, Oostburg, Plymouth, Random Lake, Reedsville, Two Rivers and Valders. They also are held at LTC Manitowoc and LTC Sheboygan as well as the Manitowoc Senior Center and Sheboygan Senior Center.

Interested individuals may choose from a wide variety of class options, including learning a new language, computer skills training, selling your house, learning sign language, practicing energy conservation, operating a digital camera or global positioning system, cake decorating, quilting or landscaping.

“Career Exploration with WISCareers” is a new Community Outreach class in which individuals learn to navigate the WISCareers career planning Web site. The Web site includes career assessments and information about career preparation and thousands of occupations. The class may be of special interest to high school students who are preparing for the future or individuals who are thinking about changing careers.

There is no fee for the WISCareers class, as it is sponsored by a grant through the Tech Prep Consortium. The Tech Prep Consortium is a group of secondary and postsecondary educators who focus on providing technical education opportunities and career education throughout the LTC district.

To help facilitate classes, LTC has loaned more than 30 computers to the high schools and 14 computers to the senior centers. At the high schools, the computers are used in Community Outreach evening classes as well as in courses in which the students can earn both high school and college credits through credit transfer agreements. At the senior centers, the computers will be used to provide Community Outreach computer classes.

The computers, which were scheduled for replacement at LTC, were loaned to the facilities to save them the cost of having to purchase new computers. The computers will remain at the facilities until they are no longer needed.

Most Community Outreach classes are held two or three nights a week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and cost between $20 and $30. Individuals age 62 or older may take a class for $4 in most cases. Interested individuals should register at least two weeks before the class begins.
