Lakeshore Technical College Adult Basic Education Instructor Sharon Abel has been selected to receive the 2008 Civilian Employee of the Year Award by the American Jail Association Awards Committee. Abel will receive the award at the AJA’s 27th Annual Training Conference and Jail Expo in Sacramento, Calif., on May 7. The award recognizes a non-sworn government agency employee who is dedicated to contributing to the institution. Abel has worked with the Sheboygan County Corrections Division for 17 years and is responsible for Lakeshore Technical College’s Adult Inmate Education Program in the Sheboygan County Detention Center. “To be named American Jail Association’s 2008 Civilian Employee of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Abel said. “I enjoy my work and am very fortunate to be recognized for it.” Sheboygan County Rehabilitation/Huber Officer and LTC Board Vice Chair Roy Kluss and Sheboygan County Sheriff Michael Helmke nominated Abel for the award. “The work Sharon does outside her normal duties, including research, grant writing, fundraising, presenting at conferences, coordination of our inmate library and basically anything that needs to be done, shows the dedication she has for her students, LTC, the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department and our community,” Kluss said. “Her advocacy for education and lifelong learning is contagious and truly makes a difference in the lives of her students and our whole community.” Abel also has been named one of the American Correctional Association’s “Best in the Business 2008.” She was nominated for the award by Kevin Mueller, a community corrections field supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, and will be featured in the June 2008 issue of ACA’s Corrections Today magazine.About Lakeshore Technical College Serving a 200,500-resident population in east central Wisconsin, LTC operates a main campus in Cleveland; additional learning sites at LTC Manitowoc and LTC Sheboygan; outreach centers at area high schools in Kiel, Mishicot, Plymouth, Random Lake, Reedsville, and Two Rivers; and 27 distance learning sites.
