Language Arts, Writing (Part One)

Test skills in error recognition and correction; covers spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, usage, and sentence structure.

(Part Two)

Essay: A topic will be given which asks the writer to present an opinion or explanation regarding a general knowledge situation.

Social Studies Tests essential concepts and methods: United States history, geography, economics, political science, and behavioral science. Two-thirds of the items are based on written selections; one-third is on visual stimuli (graphs, maps, charts, political cartoons, etc.) 70 minutes
Science Tests essential concepts and methods; basic knowledge of scientific principles, biology, earth science, chemistry and physics. Test items are based on written selections, visual stimuli (graphs, tables, charts, etc.) and life experiences. 80 minutes
Language Arts, Reading Three-fourths of the items test the ability to read, interpret, and analyze selections from popular literature, poetry and lyrics, and drama; one-fourth are based on commentaries about literature and the arts, including, literature, theatre, music, dance, film and art. 65 minutes

Mathematics

Part One—with calculator

Tests arithmetic, geometry, and algebra skills, Arithmetic, includes number relationships, measurements, and data analysis and comprises 50 percent of the test. Geometry and algebra comprise 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively. Situations presented and practical and realistic dealing with the world of work, consumerism, family situations, etc. Includes a page of mathematical formulas, eliminating the necessity of memorizing them prior to taking the test. 45 minutes
